Democratic Vistas: Civic Life, History, and American Art

A Picturing America Resource by Primary Source

How can American art be used to deepen your students' understanding of democracy in American life? Based on images from the Picturing America portfolio from the National Endowment for the Humanities, this website will show you new ways to incorporate important works of visual art in the core humanities curriculum.  Lectures explore democratic values and aesthetics as a theme in American art and highlight the "art of the people" - folk and traditional art - as an expression of American creativity. Two videos explore public art works in Boston and a lesson plan section provides you with eleven lessons to use in teaching with art in your English, history, social studies, or humanities classroom.

Democratic Vistas: Civic Life, History, and American Art was a 2-day summer conference run by Primary Source in August 2009 and August 2010 as part of a grant from the National Endowment for Humanities.
